When I first read the book, I was totally surprised that he died at such a young age! I was sort of expecting a more traditional "happy ending" to the book. Isn't it interesting (and sobering) how he only had the one "episode" of drinking and yet that "episode" is what cost him his life? I think it's neat how even though he was very ill, he recognized God's intervention, and how his illness prevented him from going down even further in the path of sin, which would have hurt him and others even more.
